The games that had been taking place or held annually at the Louisiana Superdome since 2001 is that of the New Orleans Bowl. Set in New Orleans, Louisiana, the New Orleans Bowl was originally called Wyndham New Orleans Bowl from 2002 to 2004, named after the game sponsor Wyndham Hotels and Resorts. Given the bowl gameís current sponsor, it carries the name R + L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.
As practiced, the New Orleans Bowl have entrants coming from the sides of Conference USA and Sun Belt Conference in which the said bowl is presently the only bid by Sun Belt Conference. The very first year of the New Orleans Bowl showcased North Texas from the side of Sun Belt Conference facing against Colorado State for the side of Mountain West Conference.
The recent incident involving Hurricane Katrina posed severe damage to the Louisiana Superdome, which prompted the bowl game management to hold the event on a date of 20th December at Lafayette, Louisiana. The change of location required an altogether different stadium to accommodate the bowl game in which case the Cajun Field of the University of Louisiana campus served the purpose. Also at Lafayette, the game for that said instance was called ìNew Orleans Bowl at Lafayette.î
After returning back to the original New Orleans home on the 22nd of December 2006, under the flagship of R + L Carriers, the bowl game was made to incorporate the name of the sponsor.
